The dieless drawing concept involves the stretching of a rod between capstans driven at different speeds, with the elongation not exceeding the uniform, or necking elongation. Such elongations are enhanced when rod is pulled through a heating zone followed by quenching. The dieless drawability of carbon steel is considered, in the context of elements of the necking criterion, for the cases of the austenitic and the ferrite-carbide phase fields.
