Five processes for the continuous casting of filament or fiber directly from molten metal are presented. The methods are free flight metal spinning, chill block melt spinning, the Taylor process, crucible melt extraction, and pendant drop melt extraction. The unique structure and properties that result from the rapid quench rates of direct casting are discussed. Potential uses of filament and fiber casting are considered.
