LS Cable & System will join the Japan-Korea Submarine Communication Network Construction Project (JAKO) together with its subsidiary LS Marine Solution. As a result, the project will significantly strengthen digital connectivity between Busan, South Korea, and Fukuoka, Japan.
The JAKO project will deploy optical submarine cables along a 260 km route between the two cities. Work will start this year and should finish by 2027. Furthermore, the JAKO system forms part of the broader E2A submarine cable network, which aims to boost digital capacity between East Asia and North America.
The initiative is a large-scale submarine communication infrastructure project led by a consortium of global technology and telecom companies, including Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), South Korea’s Dreamline, and Japan’s Arteria Networks. These partners plan to create a more resilient, high-capacity digital corridor across the region.
LS Cable & System will manage the full engineering, procurement, and construction scope for the JAKO project. This role marks the first time a South Korean company has delivered a global submarine communication network project on a turnkey basis. LS Marine Solution will install the submarine cable, using its marine engineering and cable-laying expertise along the Busan–Fukuoka route.
Through JAKO and the wider E2A system, LS Cable & System plans to help build a Northeast Asian digital highway and expand its position in the global digital infrastructure market, following its work in the energy highway sector. The company stated that LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution will continue to strengthen global cooperation and contribute to the expansion of the submarine infrastructure market.
