Nexans Secures Major Contract for Malta–Sicily Interconnector Project
Nexans has secured a major contract from Interconnect Malta (ICM) to deliver the Nexans Malta–Sicily interconnector project, a high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) subsea link designed to strengthen Malta’s electricity network and ensure long-term energy stability.
The new cable, manufactured at Nexans’ plant in Charleston, South Carolina, will connect Maghtab, Malta, with Ragusa, Sicily. It is expected to span about 99 km and is valued at around €300 million. Nexans installed the first Malta–Sicily interconnector in 2015, and the new line will run alongside it.
Reinforcing Malta’s Energy Future
Pascal Radue, EVP of Nexans’ Power Transmission Business Group, said the new project strengthens the bond between Malta and Sicily while ensuring long-term energy security. “This interconnector extends our successful partnership with Interconnect Malta and drives the country’s transition toward a climate-neutral economy,” Radue stated.
He emphasized that the Nexans Malta–Sicily subsea cable project will also support renewable energy growth, ensuring a more sustainable and resilient power infrastructure across the Mediterranean.
Nexans Advances Low-Carbon Cable Solutions
Nexans continues to lead in sustainable manufacturing. Its Jeumont plant in northern France will now produce low-voltage cables made with 10% recycled aluminum. These cables use low-carbon aluminum from a decarbonized energy mix, cutting carbon emissions for both Nexans and its customers.
“Our goal is to source enough recycled aluminum to meet market demand,” said Laure Desseigne, Nexans’ Sustainable Offer Marketing Director. “We’re asking customers to recycle old cables so we can turn them into new, sustainable ones.”
Nexans Increases Green Investments Linked to the Malta–Sicily Energy Connection
Nexans also announced a €15 million investment to modernize its Bourgen-Bresse plant in France. This initiative will boost production of medium-voltage cables designed for a lower environmental impact — an essential step in the company’s broader sustainability roadmap and the future of projects like the Nexans Malta–Sicily energy connection.
