Sumitomo Electric will supply and install 140 km of 525 kV HVDC cable for the Sea Link project in the U.K.
The company secured the contract from National Grid Electricity Transmission PLC (NGET).
Sumitomo Electric will deliver both cable manufacturing and installation services.
The project will support a major expansion of the U.K.’s transmission capacity.

Sea Link Will Add 2 GW of Low-Carbon Transmission Capacity
Sea Link will deliver a 2 GW HVDC connection between Kent and Suffolk.
The link will connect new converter stations in each county.
The subsea route will run through the Thames Estuary and the southern North Sea.
The project will increase the network’s ability to move renewable and low-carbon electricity.

Sumitomo Will Manufacture Subsea Cable at Port of Nigg in Scotland
Sumitomo Electric will manufacture the submarine cable at its Port of Nigg facility in Scotland.
The company plans to start construction work in 2027.
The Port of Nigg site supports U.K. infrastructure priorities tied to long-term decarbonization goals.
It also helps the country expand domestic capability for HVDC cable production.
Project Supports The Great Grid Upgrade and Long-Term Energy Goals
Sea Link stands as one of NGET’s projects under The Great Grid Upgrade.
This initiative aims to expand electricity transmission capacity across the U.K.

Port of Nigg Facility Will Create Jobs and Strengthen Supply Chains
Sumitomo Electric built the Port of Nigg facility to support U.K. energy infrastructure growth.
The company aligned the facility with the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan and Net Zero 2050 goals.
Once fully operational, the factory will create more than 200 direct jobs.
It will also support additional employment across supply chains and project execution teams.
Siemens Energy and Van Oord Will Support Project Delivery
Sumitomo Electric will work with key project partners on Sea Link.
