U.S. company wins R&D grant to pursue new products for its cable plant in Scotland

Oceaneering International will expand cable capabilities at its Rosyth, Scotland plant, supported by a €465,000 Scottish Enterprise grant. The project focuses on qualifying subsea power cables for floating offshore wind, positioning the company to extend its subsea expertise into renewables while supporting jobs and advanced manufacturing in Scotland.

Oceaneering Expands Cable Production in Scotland to Support Floating Wind Projects

Oceaneering International Inc., a U.S.-based engineering company, plans to expand cable production at its Rosyth, Scotland facility. The move reflects a global trend of manufacturers adapting operations to new opportunities in the wire and cable sector.

Grant from Scottish Enterprise Boosts Cable Development

Oceaneering has received a â‚¬465,000 grant from Scottish Enterprise to qualify new dynamic subsea cables. The funding supports initial research and development using existing equipment. The company will design and certify new subsea power cables for floating offshore wind projects.

When the qualification finishes, the company plans to invest in additional production equipment and automation. This expansion will create local jobs and enhance advanced manufacturing skills across Scotland.

Building on Rosyth’s Legacy in Offshore Cable Systems

Oceaneering’s Rosyth facility, operating since 1999, produces subsea communication, power, and hydraulic umbilicals for offshore oil and gas platforms. The company now extends this expertise to cables for renewable energy applications.

During the first phase, the team will use existing manufacturing tools to conduct research and cable qualification. If successful, Oceaneering will become an integral part of the growing floating offshore wind supply chain, helping strengthen Scotland’s renewable economy.

Industry Trend: Manufacturers Move Toward Renewables

Oceaneering’s expansion reflects a major industry trend: traditional cable makers are pivoting toward renewable markets. In contrast, India’s UltraTech Cement and Adani Group, new to cable manufacturing, have entered the market to capitalize on growth. UltraTech plans an investment of $216 million, while Adani points to the industry’s strong 13% annual growth rate.

Supporting Innovation in the Wire and Cable Sector

Oceaneering’s expansion may seem local, yet it illustrates global progress in renewable energy. The project blends subsea engineering expertise with sustainable cable manufacturing, supporting both established producers and new entrants seeking growth in clean technologies.
