The manufacturing process used in IBM to produce bifilar windings on tiny closed cores during read-write head production is described; a centerless winding technique is used. A coil winder was developed with an infinitely variable transmission, an adjustable tension mechanism for small diameter wire, satisfactory level wind control, and a layout that makes adjustments easy.
