A new range of 302, 304 and 316 type stainless steels have been developed for spring applications. The wire rods exhibit a fine, uniform grain size that results from direct quenching from rolling temperature (D-cooling) and balanced compositions. Steel composition, microstructure, the rod surface, the D-cooled steels, rod manufacture, alloys, micros, finishes, and mechanical properties are considered. (
