Description
Materials Science & Engineering seniors at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute participate in a wiredrawing laboratory with measurements including drawing force, die angle, drawing speed, and temperature, leading to calculations of friction coefficient and assessments of surface quality for various lubricants. Elements of this laboratory can be useful in the wire mill as well. This paper presents detailed procedures and data from the most recent semester’s work, along with student reactions and tips for applications to in-plant evaluations.
