Description
In 1866, the Pneumatic Steel Association was formed by a group of Americans who controlled the key patents for the steel converter (including Mushet’s, the most important patent of all). Steel ingots and billets from pneumatic converters were quickly proved to be a superlative form of iron available at a much lower price. Within ten years, the USA annual production of pneumatic steel grew from nothing to exceed 500,000 tons, mostly in the form of railroad rails.
