An alkaline electrolytic method for descaling ferrous metals and alloys is described. The hydrogen content of the parent metal is reduced, which reduces the affinity of scale for steel. The advantages of the method are discussed. Waste disposal problems, hydrogen embrittlement, and acid attack are eliminated.
