Drawing and nail-making tests were performed with various types of steel wire and drawing conditions. A correlation between smoothness ratio and die and tool life was found. Smoothness ratio is defined and explained. Lubricity and smoothness ratio, and selection of lubricants by smoothness ratio, are also discussed.
