SPC has been used for years by manufacturing divisions to improve quality and reduce cost. However, approximately 80 percent of the steps required to produce and deliver a product do not occur in the manufacturing process. Furthermore, departments such as purchasing, shipping, billing, accounting and even product design continue to function as they did twenty years ago. To survive and prosper, a company must improve not only the quality of service provided by these departments but at the same time increase their productivity and reduce cost.
