An investigation of the dieless drawing method for the production of mild steel wire

The process of dieless wiredrawing is that of causing a reduction in the wire diameter, without the use of conventional wiredrawing dies. The axially loaded wire is heated to an elevated temperature, hence initiating plastic deformation. The mechanics of this novel drawing process and a theoretical analysis of the deformation are discussed in this paper. The results of an experimental drawing program carried out with 2 mm diameter wire at temperatures between 500°C and 800°C are also presented.
