The cable industry, facing increasing competition worldwide, will in the future need to be more cost competitive through factory automation. The paper discusses a variety of advantages offered by factory automation include productivity improvement, decreased scrap, increased quality, greater flexibility in production, reduced inventory cost, greater machinery utilization and shorter delivery times. A CIM concept is presented, divided into: architecture of the system; production layouts; and machinery specifications.
