Investigations into the causes, makeup and solutions to the problems of corrosion on silver-plated copper wire are presented. Two primary types of corrosion were studied: green crud, caused by wicking of the solder flux-solvent mixture, and red plaque, caused by a copper and oxygen reaction in the presence of water. Both problems were solved by nickel plating prior to silver plating.
