A description of the Wheelabrator plant for shot blast descaling of wire rod at the Westfealische Union Co is presented. Tests and experiences are summarized, and the process is described in detail. Charts and graphs are provided showing various operations and comparing costs and efficiency with pickling. Die wear, lubricant consumption, surface condition, mechanical properties, and zinc coating applications of the wires produced are discussed.
