Detection of short and long cracks in hot wire rod during rolling

Encircling coil eddy current techniques are not successful in detecting long, continuous defects that are a very common condition in the long, rolled and drawn products associated with wire rod rolling mills. A new technique uses rotary eddy current technology to detect these longitudinal defects and transfer feedback to the process to allow for necessary adjustments to the rolling and drawing machinery, as well as classification of the finished wire rod coils.
