Nitrogen stainless steels are a metallurgically sophisticated range of alloys which have in recent years made a considerable impact in high-performance applications ranging from rod and wire to surgical implants. Control of alloy chemistry allows austenitic, martensitic, ferritic and duplex grades to be manufactured by a number of methods which are reviewed in this paper.
