The use of laser optic dimension sensors and microcomputer based controllers for control of jacket cable outside diameter (OD) in continuous vulcanizing lines is discussed. The costs of failure, OD control, the OD measuring sensor, feedback control, measurement problems and solutions, focusing the laser beam, condensate on the target, the rewards of accurate control, and reduction of the OD set-point are considered.
