Wire rod is descaled, more and more, by using mechanical methods such as brushing and shot blasting. These techniques are more productive and pollute less than chemical processes. This evolution requires wire rod with a suitable oxide scale that is not too adherent. Data obtained in laboratory experiments show the influence of cooling conditions on the scale characteristics of low carbon steels: thickness, microstructure, adhesion. Surface mechanical treatment can also affect the characteristics of the steel surface, e.g., microgeometry, work hardening, which can modify the behavior of the wire during coating.
