This paper explains the manufacture of copper-clad steel and aluminum wire and identifies opportunities to take advantage of the unique combinations of properties in clad wire. Copper-clad steel is beneficial where cables are sized based on strength rather than conductivity, as is the case for many low-current and signal leads. Copper-clad aluminum is used to reduce the weight of power cables. Both of these applications reduce cost and wiring harness bundle size, as well as weight. Processing of bimetallic wire and examples of components are also discussed.
