The Mine Equipment Research Unit of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) National Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (NMERI) tests some 5,000 mine ropes annually. This mine does a considerable amount of other essential work, statutory and non-statutory, and is the only one of its kind on the African continent. An overview is presented.
