Description
A type of semi-austenitic precipitation-hardenable stainless steel, known as 17-7 PH (AISI 631) is examined for elastic and fatigue properties, elevated temperature strength, and dimensional stability during tempering. Stress crack formation is the erratic and unreliable property of this grade, lowering the confidence of spring manufacturers and wiredrawers. Fagersta AB discusses research in inclusion control, D-cooling and control of the work hardening rate to produce a more consistent grade of 17-7 PH.
