Deleterious internal (residual) stresses are formed in multi-pass wiredrawing due to non-uniform deformation and thermal gradients across the wire cross-section. Wiredrawing is a complex interaction of several parameters, viz., wire properties, lubricant, and die design. These many factors control deformation and the resulting residual stress distributions in drawn wire. This paper will examine effects of die geometry and drawing temperature on residual stresses produced during multi-pass drawing of steel wire by using finite element analyses.
