Wire is distinctly mentioned in documents dated 1700 years B.C. and specimens in existence are known to have made 800 years B.C. During the Dark Ages, the monk Theophilus spent a great part of his life in the study and practice of the art of church decoration. He wrote at least three books; the first book deals with paintings of pictures and carries the first known mention of the art of painting in oils. The second book deals with glass making and in particular reference to stained glass windows. His third book deals with metal working with particular reference to the art practices by goldsmiths, silversmiths and coppersmiths for the production of incense burners, candlesticks and similar furnishings.
