Description
Coefficients of friction and wire surface quality are evaluated for various low speed drawing operations. Copper magnet wire is drawn using dies with die materials inclusive of: tungsten carbide, coarse, medium, and fine grained polycrystalline diamond, and single crystal diamond. Lubricants, drawing speed, and die angles are also varied. The measurements of friction coefficient and wire surface quality afford insight into the lubricant film thickness and the modes of friction. This work is part of an International Copper Association, Ltd., project at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
