Description
Traditional electronic diameter controllers use feedback control algorithms that were developed mainly for mechanical and hydraulic controllers. While these modern electronic emulations provide very adequate results, full performance is constrained by their mechanically based origins. The ability to make adjustment decisions based upon incomplete or changing data is one common deficiency. ‘Fuzzy logic’ (invented in the U.S. but implemented mainly by the Japanese) overcomes this and other deficiencies. A diameter control system for wire and tubing using fuzzy logic can meet or exceed diameter specifications and reduce material cost.
