Several aspects of grain size, including the McQuaid-Ehn index and the actual grain size, of high carbon steel wire are discussed. Methods of measuring grain size are discussed; photomicrographs illustrating grain size are presented. The influence of grain size on the manufacture of steel wire is considered. Grain size serves as a guide to melting and rolling of steel for wire.
