Development of hard metals (carbide mixtures) to replace diamonds in wiredrawing dies is described. The work drawn through the metal and diamond dies is comparable, but the hard metal dies have the advantages of lower cost and no cracking. Some precautions, including preparation of the wire and lubricants needed, to be considered in using the hard metal dies are discussed.
