High quality bars and wire rods produced by continuous casting

Sumitomo Metal Industries, in Japan, constructed the first continuous casting machine and continued to improve the quality of continuous casting steel to date. The development of ladle treatment, adoption of a large section mold (300 X 400mm), seal casting in the tundish, and an electro-magnetic stirring system are a few technologies discussed in this article. Sumitomo’s continuous casting process is outlined, and improvements at the No.2 CCM plant for production of high grade steel is schematically described.
