High temperature failure of casting and rolling components in continuous rod production

Thermal-induced failure of casting and rolling components is a universal problem in both ferrous and nonferrous rod production. Despite the fact that redraw rods for wiredrawing are commonly produced by continuous casting and hot rolling, there is very little information on these types of failure in the wire industry. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by providing a review of the fundamentals and mechanisms of high temperature failure of metallic components. Case studies of mold and roll failures in the manufacture of redraw rods will be presented.
