The development of high carbon steel rope wire with increased strength is described. Included in the discussion are some factors which contribute to strengthening, including chemical composition, transformation heat treatment, and deformation strengthening. The use of new testing techniques (X-ray and electron diffraction, and transmission and scanning microscopy) in developing higher strength wire is considered.
