The causes of hydrogen brittleness in spring steels and steps to prevent it are discussed. Embrittlement may be due to acid pickling, electro-plating from cyanide solution, cleaning of parts prior to plating, or corrosion. Test results related to the susceptibilities of various wires to embrittlement, and effects of pickling temperature and time, are presented.
