In-line dimensional measurement is becoming a must for any high-quality product from hot-rolled rod to fine wire. In particular, monitoring and documentation of diameter, ovality, area and any out-of-spec conditions are necessary for process and quality control. This paper describes the latest methods and equipment using laser scanning, laser diffraction and software for visualization. Of particular interest are various configurations of equipment in the hot rolling of rod, covering the latest developments with multiple gauging solutions.
