Scale composition and conditions of scale formation on hot-rolled steel wire rod were studied. Hot wire rod allowed to cool in the absence of oxygen formed almost no scale. Wire rod with FeO scale 3.5-4.5 5m 1m in thickness was produced which could be drawn into wire without prior descaling.
