The requirements of an acceptable measuring device for fine wire, with regard to sensitivity, repeatability, and accuracy, are discussed. Some drawbacks of the hand micrometer are considered, and the effect of anvil pressure on accuracy is evaluated. The advantages of the barrel micrometer, dial micrometer, comparators, and electric micrometers are given.
