The fundamentals of mechanical descaling of steel rod by bending and elongation, some details of the procedures, and comparisons with chemical descaling methods are presented. Photomicrographs of wire surfaces descaled by chemical and mechanical means are compared. The effects of mechanical descaling on wire and the outlook for mechanical descaling in the wire industry are discussed.
