Since the beginning of the wire and cable industry there has been a need for a means of accurately measuring the length of the product as it is being manufactured and/or spooled. The traditional means of length measurement is via a contact wheel of known circumference that rides on the top of the cable and is friction driven to a mechanical counter that accummulates the total length of a spool or production run.
