The development of a noncontact ink jet printer for marking polyethylene cable jacket is described. New cable codes can be accomodated as they are added. Selectable length marking in feet or meters and operation at line speeds up to 457 m/min are achieved. Operating principles, ink characteristics, operating parameters, ink adhesion to the cable jacket, and long term printer operation are discussed.
