The advantages of the polyimide Kapton for use as an insulation system for various types of wire are considered. Some of the problems caused by previously available insulations are discussed, as are ways in which this material solves the problems. The polyimide coating is stable at high temperatures, is lightweight, and shows mechanical toughness and high dielectric strength. Details of manufacture and testing are presented.
