Description
The improvements in the quality of high carbon rod rolled from continuously cast billets due to consistent carbon segregation and internal cleanliness are cited. Hamburger Stalhlwerke (HSW) is profiled, for its production of high carbon wire rod via the electric arc furnace continuous casting route, with a charge mix consisting of 40% scrap/60% sponge iron. The billets are rolled on a two strand rod mill to rod sizes from 5.5mm to 12.0mm. Descriptions of production standards and finished products are given.
