Fluidized beds are being used as an alternative to lead for quenching in patenting systems. However, a fluidized bed cannot achieve the same cooling rates as lead, and hence will not be able to replace lead in all applications. This paper looks at the benefits and limitations of the fluidized bed versus lead in quenching applications and provides ways to determine if a fluidized bed is a viable alternative for a given application.
