The larger the drawing strain, the more sensitive steel wire reacts to changes in strain mode. Strain softening due to the collapse of the substructure induced by the drawing mode has a profound influence on material flow in subsequent cold heading and flat rolling operations and can lead to dramatic shear banding in subsequent torsion. Superimposed aging effects can intensify the phenomenon.
