Description

This practical guide to the world of steel wire is designed to “bridge the gap” between specific drawing theory and the various applications of steel wire technology. Adapted from material presented by the author in a series of wire seminars, it addresses general subjects through numerous practical examples and illustrations of process techniques.

The book is designed not only for industry technicians looking for information on wiredrawing theory, but also for those with a theoretical knowledge who seek practical hints on current steel wire technology. It can serve as supplementary reading for students in mechanical engineering, as well as course material for wire companies’ internal training programs.

The book describes steel wiredrawing processes, related chemistry, and the properties of various steels. Other topics include materials testing; wire rod; pickling and mechanical descaling; lubrication; wiredrawing theory; dies and drawing machines; cast and helix straightening; payoffs, take-ups, and welding; cleaning of drawn wire; rolling and flattening; heat treatment; galvanizing; and chemical and electrolytic metal wire coating.

Author Per Enghag has more than 30 years of experience in metals. After starting his career as director of The Swedish School of Mining and Metallurgy in the 1960s, he moved to steel wire products producer Garphyttan in the 1970s. He has operated his own company, Materialteknik HB, in Örebro, Sweden, since 1980.
