This has enabled the construction industry to utilize pre-stressed concrete girders, piling and an array of other shapes as an alternate to shapes made of steel. The market for pre-stressed strands, which is now available as a commodity has grown since the early trials in the fifties to several hundred thousand tons annually in the USA and greater abroad.
