The Critical Role of the Steel Wire Industry in Transoceanic Fiber-Optic Communications Systems

$15.00

The 1980s ushered in digital fiber-optic communication systems from breakthroughs in electronics and economical manufacture of high quality fibers. Once cost effective application of this technology was the long-haul telecommunications market including transoceanic cable systems for high capacity voice, data, and image transmissions. The design requirements for the cable ultimately placed many more burdens on the steel strength member than in traditional submarine cable designs. In this paper, we will trace the design evolution and the various cable characteristics.
