Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) wire die blanks were introduced into the wire die industry by General Electric in 1974. Within the next five years Sumitomo Electric and DeBeers also began to produce PCD blanks for wire dies. Single crystal synthetic (SCS) diamond die materials were introduced by Sumitomo Electric in 1985 and several years later by De Beers. This paper will detail the evolution of these products and their impact on wiredrawing practices.
