The importance of the brass plate and the underlying steel surface in the production of steel wire tire cord is discussed. Topics include chemical characterization of the surface using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and photo electron spectroscopy (ESCA), contact contamination and outside contamination, the influence of wire pretreatment on the wire surface, and rubber/steel cord adhesion.
