A statistical survey of over 8000 laboratory and field test records provides a basis of discussion on the condition of wire ropes in service. This paper critically reviews present wire rope inspection procedures and modern test instrumentation, including electomagnetic instruments which are widely used in the industry. Principal categories of wire rope deterioration are given.
